Plus 10 Delightful Sandalwood Diffuser Recipes To Try!
Sandalwood is wildly popular in men’s fragrances, body wash, after-shave balms, and even hair products but it’s gaining popularity with women too! Especially in the world of essential oils. But what does sandalwood smell like? In a word, woodsy.

Sandalwood Really Does Smell Like a Walk in the Woods!
But not just any woods.
Sandalwood oil comes from sandalwood trees found in India, Nepal, Bangladesh, Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Australia, Indonesia, Hawaii, and other Pacific Islands. Hence, the main smell of sandalwood is, unsurprisingly, woodsy. This scent comes from a component called santanol. But there’s more to it. Sandalwood can also be described as earthy, creamy, sweet, rich, musky with undertones of balsamic, sweet, and floral.
It’s pretty complex! And very satisfying.
Sandalwood and the oil produced by these trees such a wonderfully intoxicating, aromatic, and distinct fragrance. It has been used for many moons and in many religious and spiritual practices. Sandalwood products are considered highly valuable and unfortunately, the woods have fallen victim to overharvesting at times so pure sandalwood oils can be a bit expensive.
Another really cool thing about sandalwood is that it works marvelously as a transporter for other fragrances.
When delicate sandalwood is mixed with other woody, earthy aromas they complement each other and it really does smell like a walk in the forest. But it is also wonderful paired with soft, sweet, and floral scents like vanilla, rose, geranium, and ylang-ylang. It makes a great base for any complex fragrance blend as it lends grounding and warmth.
Something about sandalwood just brings a nice balanced aroma to whichever other oils you blend it with.
Personally, I think that you can combine it with just about anything and it is hands down, one of my favorite smells, whether it be in candles, soaps, essential oils, skincare products, or cologne. To me, it might just be one of the best smells on the planet. I especially loooove it blended with myrrh. My mom always said I had champagne taste (on a beer budget). Ha!
