Let’s begin at the beginning…get decluttering.

According to research, decluttering creates a great sense of confidence and self-efficacy!

Where Do I Start With A Cluttered Bedroom?

Clearing out any unnecessary items from your small bedroom is the only way to start. Keeping your room decluttered can make it easier to relax in what might otherwise seem like an overcrowded space. Remember, you have little square footage at hand! By making use of every possible nook or cranny, organization skills will become more ingrained into daily life.

How To Utilize Space In A Small Bedroom

The Most Clever Ideas To Maximize Space In A Small Bedroom

Depending on the layout of your bedroom you may only have room for a small dresser or you may not even have room for a dresser at all. You will have to find smart ways to store items in the space you have.

One of the best ways you can keep a small bedroom organized is using the space under your bed. Three of these under-the-bed storage boxes. fit perfectly under my queen bed and I was pleasantly surprised at how much I could fit in them! It’s the perfect place to store out-of-season clothes and extra bedding.

Some under-the-bed containers have wheels and some with dividers that are designed specifically to store shoes.

There are awesome and stylish queen bed frames that have storage space built-in (like drawers). If your regular queen bed frame is high enough it will be able to accommodate under-the-bed storage solutions.

Make good use of this space to store clothes, extra bedding, or off-season wardrobe items.

You can fit suitcases, baskets, or boxes under your queen bed and it will still feel nice and neat and organized. Under-the-bed storage like this is one of the most clever extra space ideas for small bedrooms and it’s so tidy!

Besides boxes you can also use large clear vacuum storage bags, so you can find what you need quickly. Amazon and Bed Bath and Beyond have a great selection of under-the-bed storage options that you can have delivered right to your front door.

Closet organizers are also helpful. You can store so much more in an organized closet than you can in one that always looks like it got hit by a tornado. If you can afford a built-in closet system consider that but if you’re on a more modest budget don’t fret. You can find more affordable stacking solutions or cube organizers at Walmart, Target, or on Amazon.

Take advantage of the closet to stack sweaters, jeans, and other bulky items like comforters and throws. You can easily accumulate too many sets of sheets, blankets, or throws so sort through your collection periodically and once again choose a few to keep and donate the others.

Find multi-use furniture for your tiny space. When you purchase furniture for a small bedroom, buy as many pieces of multi-purpose furniture as possible.

Rather than simply buying a chair for your bedroom, buy a storage ottoman or a bench with a seat that lifts up to reveal storage space underneath. This is a good place to store extra linens and blankets.

Also, make sure every table you put in the room has drawers or shelves that provide extra storage space.

If you want a vintage or bohemian vibe, maybe a trunk will appeal to you. You can store things in them that you don’t use regularly such as seasonal items. This way you can use the trunk as a side table and for storage! They are another clever dual-purpose piece of furniture.

Make your walls work for you. Expandable wooden racks can be hung on the wall to hold lightweight items such as hats, scarves, belts, or purses. Placing hooks in the wall gives you added organization options for jewelry and tote bags.

You can even hang shelving units on the walls to help keep your small bedroom organized. And speaking of walls, I recommend having the walls painted a light neutral color which gives the illusion of space.

Don’t keep copious amounts of books in your room. If you like to read in your bedroom, limit the number of books or magazines you keep in the boudoir. Read them, then donate or recycle them. Don’t let them pile up in the room or on your bedside table and turn into unwanted clutter.

If you really can’t bear to part with some of your books (I get that, believe me) then find somewhere else to store them in your home like the den or home office.

Keep decorative items and mementos to a minimum to avoid a cluttered look in the room. A few timeless pieces can keep your room bright and cherry.

Look for decorative boxes and baskets that are dual-purpose and serve both as decor items and as added storage spaces. Remember the more decor items you have the more things you will have to clean and dust!

Go easy on the pillows. Pillows are great, but too many can clutter up your bedroom. And what’s the point of making a bed if you’re just going to toss more pillows on top? Keep it simple by choosing only one or two pillows that will make any space feel cozy and inviting.

Declutter your clothes a couple of times a year. When the seasons change it is a great time to take a look at your wardrobe and start making some decisions about what stays and what goes.

Throw away or recycle the worn-out pieces, even if you really liked them when they were new. Donate items you no longer like or can no longer wear.

If some items need mending (and you are actually going to mend them!), this is a good time to take care of that. Perhaps consider a capsule wardrobe so you can wear the same articles of clothing in many different ways.
