Clothing For New Moms Can Be Both Comfy AND Flattering

Fortunately, fashion has progressed to a point in history for women, that the designers recognize we ladies crave comfort as well as style. And that includes post-maternity clothes.

Tight girdles and binding bone corsets have been left behind in the archives of fashion history. Thank goodness!

Yes, there will be days when you are wearing your grungiest old sweats and your oversized tees, but for those days when you want to feel a bit more put together, I’ve rounded up a few of my favorite staples.

So, if you’re going to have a baby and you’re not quite sure what to wear after giving birth, you’re in the right place.

Postpartum Fall Fashion: How To Dress Your New Mom Body

Undergarments

Granted, undergarments are for all seasons, but like anything else, a great outfit starts with a great foundation, and in this case, bras and underwear are the starting point.

Some crazy, not-so-enjoyable things are likely happening with your body postpartum and the right undergarments are essential!

Choose good quality undergarments to wear after delivery and they will provide just what you need for your post-baby body!

Bras/Nursing Bras

You probably won’t fit into your pre-pregnancy or even your maternity bras once your milk comes in and as you continue to nurse.

Your boobs are going to be a great deal larger and pretty tender for a bit, so once again think comfort, support, as well as ease of breastfeeding your baby.

I loved the sports bra style, and while I ended up being an exclusively pumping mom, I still loved having easy access when I needed to pump.

There are some great styles to choose from, and I found the soft, seamless, and wire-free ones to be the best option. The classic nursing cami is one of my faves.

A good nursing bra is a must-have for you if you are breastfeeding or pumping or both. Give yourself enough room to slip your nursing pads in, and choose something you will be comfortable sleeping in as well.

A quality nursing bra provides just the right balance of support and soft comfort for the girls until things get back to normal.

You don’t want anything pinching or binding to add to your other postpartum aches and pains.

Take it from me, it is best to have a few on hand because of course, there will be leaks from time to time. Kind of hard to avoid that when you are a human milk machine.

If you are pumping, you can opt for a bra such as this hands-free pumping bra, designed specifically to fit breast pumps.

But in a pinch, use this frugal mom hack. Take an old sports bra (one you will not want to use again afterward obviously!) and simply cut holes out over where your nipples sit.

Whichever style you choose, be sure to have several on hand to save yourself from doing laundry every single day.

Postpartum Underwear

Firstly, grab as many of those huge mesh disposable panties from the hospital as they will let you take home with you! They are one of the best things to have in your postpartum care kit until you are ready to wear something a bit more normal.

Secondly, think dark colors. There is a lot going on with bodily fluids for a good while after you deliver. Bleeding, postpartum mucus, and all that other fun stuff as you recover postpartum can get a bit yucky, to say the least.

You may even want to consider getting yourself some leakproof underwear or a pair of these soothing fourth-trimester underwear that comes with soothing gel packs that fit right in the panties. I wish I would have known about these after I had my baby!

You won't be in your cute, lacy light-colored underwear for a bit... well if you are, chances are they will be ruined so trust me on this one.

It can be a positively messy situation. Actually, for the first few weeks after delivery, I mostly wore disposable underwear. Depends and Always brands are both totally fine.

Don't be embarrassed! It's just a part of the whole postpartum situation down there. Ahh, the things we women go through... Oh, and not to worry...you'll be back in your "pretty underwear" one day.

If you had a C-section you may want something high-waisted but still super soft as to not irritate your incision or something that goes under the bump instead.

Cute Postpartum Dresses For Late Summer/Early Fall

A flowy postpartum dress can be so comfortable after giving birth, not to mention a very cute addition to your new mommy wardrobe!

The Maxi Dress

Sleeveless and short sleeve maxi dresses can be worn at the end of summer and into the beginning of fall and as it gets a bit colder a long-sleeved one will do the trick.

A maxi dress like this is an awesome choice because it can be worn as a maternity dress and then be kept on as a part of your postpartum wardrobe after you have the baby!

Our son was born at the end of August so really just a few weeks before fall but it was still steaming hot where we live. Depending on what your specific fall weather is like you can choose accordingly because, of course, not everyone lives in harsh winter climates.

Honestly, I cannot emphasize enough how much I loved wearing these, especially in those early days right after giving birth. Hence, the maxidress definitely makes our postpartum fall fashion round-up. And there are some really pretty boho styles in fall colors!

I lived in dresses like these for the first 6 weeks. Nothing feels better than a comfy, stretchy, and breathable dress on those hot days. Those with capped or mid-length sleeves can also be worn well into the fall.

Oh, and did I mention that some of them even have pockets? Love them!

It's a great idea to look for something that has an empire waist. This super flowy style is great at camouflaging the tummy as well, especially if you choose a print pattern. In other words, the focus is more on the pattern than your shape. If you can find one with pockets, all the better.

A pretty maxi dress will provide excellent coverage for you as maternity wear or post-pregnancy and they are oh so comfy!

Postpartum Clothes For Fall Going Into Winter

There's a nip in the air and fall will soon turn into winter. And hey! Just because you are sporting your new mom bod, doesn't mean you can't partake in the action and look fabulous.

Believe me, you don't have to spend a fortune to look great either. I found some really cute fall/winter pieces for new moms, something to suit every budget.

Long Sweaters

Long sweaters are just the ticket when you are aiming to conceal some lumps and bumps that may not have been there before. They're essential in every new mom's closet for postpartum fall fashion.

Tunic tops, long cardigans, or cardigan coats are must-haves when it comes to fall/winter clothing for new moms.

A long boho cardigan like this one layered over a flattering scoop-neck tee and leggings is a cute look. (Or jeans when you're ready).

Ladies, warm, cozy, and comfortable doesn't have to mean frumpy. Pair any of these longer tops with high-waisted leggings or jeggings. Add a cute pair of boots and you'll be good to go!

These long sleeve pullover sweaters and sweatshirts never seem to go out of style and you can easily add them to your postpartum fall wardrobe! They are perfect for those brisk fall days and provide easy access for nursing moms.

Make Maternity Jeans A Part Of Your Postpartum Wardrobe

Don't be too quick to toss your maternity jeans, leggings, and jumpsuits. You know the nice comfy bottoms. They can double nicely as postpartum pants. I wore mine for a long time after giving birth!

The elasticized panel on matwear jeans is perfect for after you have the baby too, and you will be oh so comfortable in them. No worries about your tummy showing when you raise your arms!

I wore maternity jeans throughout the whole fall and winter seasons after I delivered my baby. I loved them that much. You can fold the top panel down as well if it feels better for you, and your top is long enough. Denim overalls and jumpsuits are excellent options that you can wear during pregnancy and postpartum!

Leggings And Boots

Once the cold weather hits, I live in warm leggings. Pair them with an oversized sweatshirt, your favorite long knit sweater or a boyfriend button-down.

You may not want to or be ready for squeezing into your pre-pregnancy jeans for quite a while so having a few pairs of great leggings in your postpartum repertoire is vital.

Postpartum biker shorts or compression leggings are a great way to feel comfortable as your uterus and belly return to their old shape and size. Choose staples in classic colors like black, navy, dark grey, or hunter green that will work as a base with any top.

The Best Postpartum Leggings Are Comfy & Stylish!

Leggings are so versatile! You can wear them for a light workout or with a cute pair of platform sneakers for running errands but you can also throw together a cute mom outfit for going out. Dress up your leggings a bit with a cool pair of knee-high leather boots, lace combat boots, or something with a chunky heel.

One of my all-time favorite looks is wearing my leggings with a long poncho or cape and boots or booties of any kind. Whatever your taste, there's a pair of boots for you that will complete your outfit.

And of course, for your dress-down days or lounging around the house, there's nothing like a good pair of yoga pants and an oversized sweatshirt.

If you're anything like me, you'll want to have some "good" sweats to hang around the house in, you know, for those days when someone might ring the doorbell.

Coats And Scarves

If ponchos and capes aren't your bag, go for something classic like a mid-length wool navy peacoat or trench.

These never go out of style and are easy to accessorize with a beautiful scarf to add a pop of color.

We all have those days as new moms when our self-esteem can use a little pick-me-up, and wearing a comfortable, flattering outfit on your post-pregnancy mom bod can be just the ticket.

Certainly, postpartum self-care starts from the inside out, so be patient and give yourself time to heal physically and emotionally. And when you're ready to step out, do it in style!

Whatever your taste, there is something for every woman when it comes to postpartum fall fashion.

With these basics in your closet, you will be comfy and stylish throughout the whole season.
