When it comes to DIY skin serums, you can concoct something as simple or as complex as you’d like.

But if you’re not sure where to begin, a basic lavender and frankincense blend is a great place to start for more youthful, glowing skin!

These two essential oils together are a real powerhouse!

Lavender and frankincense provide some of the best natural healing properties that can help rejuvenate and nourish your skin.

This DIY oil serum can be applied to your face, neck, chest, hands or anywhere else you feel it is needed.

Our skin ages, it’s a fact of life. The effects of the passing years combined with sun exposure, pollution, poor hydration, stress, and sleep deprivation are common reasons for tired and lackluster skin.

Yes, it is important to love the skin you’re in and I do appreciate that I have earned some of the lines on my face.

They say wrinkles only go where the smiles have been. So true right?

If you smile and laugh a lot, that’s a great thing!

However, there’s nothing wrong with wanting to maintain some of that youthfulness that a glowing and healthy complexion can achieve.

The older I get, the more I realize how important taking care of your skin is.

Yes, as a GenXer, I totally used to lay out with tanning oil (0 SPF of course) and sizzle in the sun (pretty sure a lot of us did). If I were to write a letter to my younger self, I surely would advise against this.

Actually, I’m old enough to remember my mom using baby oil mixed with iodine to suntan. Yikes! Times have so changed.

This is a simple DIY skin serum made with lavender and frankincense that can be an amazing addition to your basic skincare routine.

You don’t have to spend a whack of cash and a little will go a long way because essential oils are so concentrated. And remember to always choose high-quality essential oils, not perfume or fragrance oils. There is a big difference.

DIY Lavender and Frankincense Skin Serum Recipe

This is a super simple recipe to make. It will take you all of 2 minutes at the most. The amounts you use will depend on the size of your glass bottle or roller bottle and it does not have to be an exact science.

We’re not baking a cake here so if a couple of extra drops of something slip in, no need to worry!

For this skin serum recipe, I will give instructions for making a 10 ml roller bottle (around .34 oz).

INGREDIENTS

  • 10 ml roller bottle
  • 5-10 drops pure lavender essential oil
  • 5-10 drops pure frankincense oil
  • carrier oil (jojoba or your choice)

DIRECTIONS

  • add essential oils to the bottle
  • using a small funnel, slowly add carrier oil leaving a small space on the top
  • snap the rollerball top into place
  • screw on the cap
  • swirl gently to mix

  • Next, simply roll on your DIY skin serum and slowly rub it in. Take care to not get too close to your eyes.
  • Rub the oil blend gently onto your face, neck, chest, and even the backs of your hands.
  • After it has been absorbed go about your regular daily makeup routine.
  • At night time, apply again after washing and toning your face, followed by your regular night cream and eye cream.
  • Be sure to use your lavender and frankincense serum consistently for best results!

You can make it in a roller bottle as suggested above or in a glass bottle with a dropper.

Optional AddIns

You may want to add a few drops of other essential oils to this lavender and frankincense blend that your skin will love!

The choices are endless really but a few suggestions that I like are:

Can You Apply Essential Oils Directly On Your Skin?

There is some disagreement on this, according to my research. It seems that for the most part, diluting essential oils with a carrier oil before applying to skin is recommended but if an essential oil is mild, you may try it straight. Of course, we all have different skin types and tolerances.

When it comes to my face, personally, I like to use essential oils mixed with carrier oil or face cream.

But for blemishes, I will dab a teeny amount of pure lavender or frankincense essential oil directly on the pimple.

Use a cotton ball or a Q-Tip to apply instead of bare fingers to keep any bacteria from transferring to your face.

What Is The Best Carrier Oil To Use For DIY Face Serum?

This is a personal preference and there are different carrier oils according to skin type.

I recommend using jojoba oil because it is nourishing, doesn’t clog pores, and is beneficial for all skin types. It absorbs very quickly.

Sweet almond oil is another excellent all-around choice, as is sunflower oil.

If your skin is on the drier side, you may like using pure extra virgin olive oil or argan oil (high in vitamin E).

Shea or rosehip oil have many amazing nourishing properties and are both excellent choices for mature skin, while tamanu oil is great for oily, acne-prone skin.

No matter which carrier oil you choose, be sure it is a high-quality one, preferably cold-pressed and 100% organic.

The purer the oil, the better the benefit to your skin and it will maximize the benefits of your essential oils.

There You Have It! A Super Simple Lavender and Frankincense Blend For Glowing Skin

This easy-to-make DIY face serum with lavender and frankincense is a great way to nourish and repair tired skin and achieve a wonderful glow. A little of this anti-aging powerhouse goes a long way and the fragrance is divine!

So, while I still love the smell of Hawaiian Tropic, and if we ever get to Mexico again, I will lay out and oil up a little bit (with an SPF oil, naturally). But the baby oil and iodine all over is a thing of the past.

I solemnly swear to always use sunblock on my face and wear a nice wide-brimmed straw hat. And I will definitely bring my magic face serum with me for some sun aftercare.

Make lavender and frankincense skin serum a part of your daily routine and the results will speak for themselves.

I hope you give it a try and love it and if you do, why not leave us a comment? We’d love to hear your thoughts!

Until next time, K.

  1. I have neck scars from a car accident from over 30 years ago, haven’t been able to get rid of the scars….3 years ago I tried lavender essential oil as a bug repellant and found out by accident that the lavender essential oil was also removing my scars as well as deterring mosquitoes….so I have been growing my own lavender as well for many other purposes but the lavender essential oil has beautifully saved dried skin and lightened sun spots….I also mix the lavender oil with vanilla essential oil, another great bug repellant and makes a beautiful, soft perfume,I get many compliments on that scent and many are surprised how great my bug repellant smells. Note: do not use alot, it can be overwhelming, a little goes a long way.

    • Lavender is good for soooo many things. It is absolutely one of my all time faves. We are going camping soon so I will definitely whip up some bug repellant…maybe vanilla, lavender, and lemon would be a lovely combo! Thanks for your comment! 🙂
