I write this post from a place of love, light, and wholehearted encouragement for all my fellow IVF warriors out there as you follow your dreams of motherhood. I truly believe that positive affirmations and visualizations can help you to stay calm, focused, and manifest the desired outcome of your IVF treatment.
Infertility sucks. And going through IVF is hard. Really hard. I know this because I’ve been there.
So much of the process focuses on the physical. The timing, the medications, the injections. But as tiring as it is physically, it can also be very draining emotionally and mentally.
You may feel like a lot of it is out of your hands as far as the medical side of it. And in reality, I suppose that’s true. You are trusting your doctor to set the best course of action for you. However, one of the things you do have the ability to do is control your mindset.
Positive affirmations and visualizations can help you to stay calm and help you to stay focused, emotionally balanced, and hopeful during your IVF treatment.

What is a positive affirmation anyway?
According to psychologydefinition.org, an affirmation is “a brief phrase which is spoken again and again in an effort to plant seeds of happy and positive notions, conceptions, and attitudes into one’s psyche.”
They are simple phrases that you repeat to yourself a few times a day to encourage positive changes in your life, uplift and motivate you, and combat negative self-talk. It might feel a little awkward at first. But if you give it a try, you will soon find it gets easier and feels more natural with time and practice.
You can also write your affirmations down in a journal or on sticky notes to place around your home where you will see them frequently. Think fridge, bathroom mirror, or office bulletin board.
And remember, it’s important to say your affirmation in the present tense. In other words, affirming what you want in a way that says you already have it. For example, “My body is strong and healthy” or “I trust my body to carry a healthy pregnancy”.
What is the difference between an affirmation and a visualization?
An affirmation is auditory and verbal (in other words, you speak the words out loud and hear them). While visualization is visual and non-verbal.
Visualization is also a very powerful way to create positive thoughts and enhance our well-being, both mental and physical.
How To Do Positive Visualizations
Start off by getting yourself in a very relaxed state, breathe deeply, close your eyes, and visualize your intention. Somewhere quiet, without distractions is ideal. If you have any type of zen-like meditation or home yoga space, definitely use that. Otherwise, your bedroom or anywhere that you feel most calm in will work.
You may even want to incorporate some calming essential oils into your routine to help destress and promote relaxation. Try a diffuser or simply use topically mixed with a carrier oil. PLEASE refer to this article which covers the topic of which essential oils are safe when trying to conceive or when pregnant, and which to avoid.
If you are waiting for that phone call from the clinic to find out if your eggs have fertilized or how many viable embryos you have, picture that happening, the cells dividing and thriving. Whatever you envision is up to you, there’s no right or wrong way to do this.
Picture your embryo implanting, healthy, and growing or see yourself pregnant in your mind’s eye. The key is to picture it happening in the present, not some far off future.
Just try to imagine it in your mind as vividly as you can with all the details, sort of like watching a movie in your head. Choose a couple of your positive affirmations and say them out loud softly, repeating a few times, sort of like a mantra.
By using the two techniques together, you may find a shift in your outlook towards positive, optimistic, and hopeful. Your stress levels will come down as your breath slowly and deeply, relaxing your body and calming your mind.
Like I said, it may feel a bit strange when you first start, but you’ll get the hang of it in no time.
Brush Negative Thoughts Away
By the same token, if you constantly tell yourself, “I’m broken, I’m infertile” or “I’ll never get pregnant” or engage in other negative thought patterns, you’ll carry that in your heart and you will start to believe it. If you find this happening, brush those negative thoughts away quickly so it doesn’t become a habit.
Make a conscious effort to work on your positive affirmations and visualizations as you go through your IVF treatments, and soon it will become second nature.
Mind-Body Connection
I found a really amazing mind/body meditation program called Circle and Bloom. It is an audio meditation series available on CD and other formats as well. I downloaded it to my phone when I was going through my IVF treatments and found it wonderful. It helped calm my anxiety and keep me focused on the positive while tuning in on my body.
“The IVF-IUI Mind-Body Program is based on our bestselling Natural Cycle for Fertility Program and tailored to meet your specific needs while going through IVF/IUI. The program includes 18 unique, guided audio IUI and IVF meditations, including special sessions to listen to before, during, and after your IVF/IUI procedure.” ~from Circle and Bloom Editorial Review.
They also have guided meditation programs geared towards, natural fertility, PCOS, egg and embryo donation, birthing and so many more.
Can positive affirmations and visualizations really help me during IVF?
Absolutely. Doing positive affirmations and creative visualizations during your IUI or IVF cycle is of great benefit.
4 Main Ways Affirmations Can Help During Infertility
Activates your creative subconscious which helps to generate new ways of thinking of things and creative ways to achieve your goals.*
Activates the law of attraction, the belief that the universe creates and provides for you that which your thoughts are focused on. This law allows for infinite possibilities, infinite abundance, and infinite joy.*
Stimulates your brain energy. “According to research using brain imagery, visualization works because neurons in our brains, those electrically excitable cells that transmit information, interpret imagery as equivalent to a real-life action. When we visualize an act, the brain generates an impulse that tells our neurons to “perform” the movement.”**
Builds internal motivation for you to endure and keep taking the necessary steps to achieve your dreams.*
