As you can see there are a few essential oils that are the main players when it comes to concoctions for cough and cold symptoms. Tea tree, eucalyptus, and lemon are real powerhouses!

It’s important to note that most of the essential oils used in blends for cough and colds are quite potent so these diffuser recipes generally call for small amounts of the stronger oils. If you find you want or need more, feel free to add but do so in small increments.

You don’t even have to wait for a cold to hit, actually. Run any of these blends through your diffuser as an immune booster, keeping the air in your home clean and purified.

Now You’re A Pro On What To Diffuse For A Cold!

All these essential oils can help open air passages, clear mucus, help ease coughing fits, and relieve sinus pressure. They support your immune system and help your body fight off those nasty invading germs.

Alternatively, if you don’t have a diffuser you can use the tried and true steam method with a cup of steaming hot water, a few drops of essential oil, and a towel draped over your head. It’s a bit more intense for sure but when I had a bad cold earlier this year, this method really helped kick it fast.

Fortunately for me, I don’t get sick too often but this year, our son started school and as a rite of passage, he has brought home a few colds since fall began. So, my diffusers have been pretty much running 24-7.

Keep The Air In Your Home Humidified During Flu Season

Keeping the air in your home humidified can help tremendously with colds, coughs, congestion, sinus pain, and pressure. Using a humidifier or a diffuser helps keep the air humid and is an excellent way to reap the therapeutic benefits of essential oils.

You might like a diffuser made specifically for a child’s room with a nightlight like this one,

You might even want to invest in a Himalayan Salt Lamp which is said to reduce air impurities (also they just look really cool).

If you have little ones (especially under 2), take care to consult your doctor or pediatrician before diffusing or using essential oils around babies and toddlers. Some brands such as Young Living and Plant Therapy Essential Oils offer Kid Safe product lines. Also take care which ones you diffuse around pets, especially cats! For more info, please look under Resources at the bottom of this page.

Eucalyptus, of course, can work wonders on its own or in combination with other oils like lemon, tea tree, oregano, rosemary, and lavender. Play with these blends, use your imagination, and invent your recipes!

As a bonus, these essential oils diffuser blends for colds make your house smell amazing, fresh, and clean!

This time of the year we are often stuck inside, windows, shut, and furnace running so crank open your windows from time to time. Release the stale air from your living space and breathe in some good health.

And remember, you don’t have to save these blends until you have caught a cold. Diffuse them anytime (especially the Stay Well Blend) to boost your immune system and ward off any incoming cold and flu bugs that may come your way.
