Lavender and Peppermint Scalp Scrub For Hair Growth and Detox

DIY Scalp Scrub recipe with 3 simple ingredients!

If you love essential oils and are always on the lookout for new ways to incorporate them into your beauty routine, here’s a DIY scalp scrub recipe you will love. You can definitely experiment with a variety of essential oils to use in your homemade scalp treatment but in this case, I am keeping it simple with lavender and peppermint.

This is an easy DIY recipe for stimulating and nourishing your scalp, encouraging hair growth, exfoliating those flaky dead skin cells, and for just plain good overall scalp and hair health.

It’s tingly and soothing, smells fantastic, and I absolutely love it!

While certainly there are products you can buy to scrub your scalp, I’ve always been a fan of mixing up concoctions at home to try out. DIY beauty products are super fun to experiment with. If you already have a wide array of essential oils in your collection and a bottle of olive oil in your pantry, you’re well on your way!

Here’s what you’ll need:

  • carrier oil (fractionated or melted coconut, jojoba, olive, or sweet almond oil)
  • an exfoliant AKA something gritty (brown sugar, Epsom salt, sea salt, coffee)
  • essential oils (peppermint and lavender)

**When using essential oils topically anywhere on your body, it’s a good idea to do a test patch on your wrist to be sure your skin doesn’t react negatively in any way. Also, if you have any chronic skin conditions or scalp damage, speak to your doctor or dermatologist before using any type of scalp scrub.

No fractionated coconut oil? No problem! You can simply melt regular coconut oil from its solid form in the microwave in about 30 seconds.

Side note: Coconut oil can be a bit on the heavy side so if you tend to have fine hair, you may prefer to use jojoba or light olive oil which won’t weigh you down.

What Are The Benefits Of A Scalp Scrub?

Treating yourself to a scalp scrub is a wonderful way to keep your scalp healthy and nourished. The gritty ingredients like salt or sugar help to gently exfoliate your scalp, remove excess oils and product build-up, and promote hair growth through improved circulation. It can also be an excellent way to remove sebum and dandruff-causing skin cells that hang out under your locks.

This DIY scalp scrub with its natural ingredients can be used for all hair types, even curly or coarse since it is applied to the root and not the rest of the hair.

How To Use A Scalp Scrub (And How Often?)

How often to use a scalp scrub depends on your hair and skin type but dermatologists generally recommend that twice a week should be the maximum.

If your hair and scalp tend to be very oily naturally, you can do this treatment more frequently. On the other hand, if you have a dry or sensitive scalp, using a scalp scrub (DIY or otherwise) should be done less often.

Your lifestyle can also be a key determinant. For example, if you work out and sweat every single day, your hair may be prone to more oil buildup from perspiration.

Do you use a ton of product in your hair regularly? You may need to detox your scalp more often to get rid of gunky build-up from hairspray, mousse, gel, or hair sculpting products. Dry shampoo in particular can build up on your scalp quite quickly.

I don’t use a ton of product in my hair so I only do this type of DIY scalp scrub once or twice a month.

Get Ready For Your Scalp Treatment At Home

It’s quick and easy to give your scalp a little TLC!

Before you start:

Brush hair from root to tip, find your natural part, and throw a towel or cape over your shoulders.

You can also lay a towel down over your bathroom counter or sink to catch any stray drops or sugar/salt grains.

What Essential Oils Are Good For A Scalp Scrub?

First of all, what’s so great about lavender and peppermint? They have countless benefits and are two of my favorite essential oils in general but especially in DIY beauty recipes.

Lavender~ Lavender oil lubricates the scalp and helps to balance sebum production for overall good scalp health. It is anti-microbial, has antiseptic properties, promotes hair growth, and has a lovely scent, earthy and calming.

Peppermint~ Peppermint essential oil, like lavender, has antimicrobial properties and can stimulate hair growth through better circulation. It easily penetrates the scalp and wakes up the hair follicles. It feels cool, soothing, and tingly when applied (a little goes a long way, which is why my recipe only calls for 2-3 drops). Peppermint oil works particularly well for dry scalp.

What other essential oils can I use in my DIY Scalp Scrub?

While I love the lavender and peppermint combo in this recipe, there are many other oils that can be used in your homemade scalp scrub. Have fun, play around and see which you like best!
