30 of the Best Books for 1-2-3 Year Olds

Reading with your toddler opens their little minds to the magic of new people, places, and things all in the comfort of your lap! It is one of the best things you can ever do for your child and quite honestly my very favorite part of the day. I wanted to share our current list of 30 best books to read with your toddler.

Our list will grow and change over the years I’m sure, but for now, these are some of the books we enjoy reading each and every night.

Reading Books With Your Kids Is A Certain Kind Of Magic

I remember my Mom reading to me when I was little and thinking that it was the most magical and safest place on earth, listening to her soothing voice whisk me away to all those fascinating far-off places. Thankfully, I even kept some of my childhood books just in case I had a little one of my own.

She cultivated a love of reading within me that has lasted my whole life.

Finally, now, my time has come to pass it along.

Now that The Bug (my son in case it’s your first time here) is almost three years old, we have made it to the point where his favorite pastime isn’t chewing on the corners of the book. He gets right into the story now and that makes it all the more fun for us both.

I swear, I can see the wheels turning in his head as he flips through the pages, soaking in the colorful, fun illustrations and deciphering the letters and words. It’s like I can almost hear his brain expanding as he sets sail for new horizons on a pirate ship or explores The 100 Acre Woods with Winnie The Pooh.

30 Of The Best Books To Read With Your Toddler

Big Board First 100 Words by Roger Priddy. One of the first books we started with, 100 first words with bright images of everyday objects to help build your little one’s vocabulary. The first on our list and a great place to start. Absolutely one of the best books to read with your toddler!

There is also a box set featuring words, animals, numbers, colors, and shapes!

Alphaprints: Colors by Roger Priddy. We thought this one was so cool when we saw it at Costco and had to grab it. Bright bold colors, a different animal for each color and little everyday objects hidden within the pictures. The pictures are all raised and textured to feel like fingerprints. Great for little ones discovering the sense of touch! Super cute book.

Good Night Chicago by Adam Gamble. Sent to us by a dear friend in Chicago, this one has been loved so much that I am in need of a new copy! Discover the sights and landmarks of the Windy City from the Navy Pier Ferris Wheel to Wrigley Field and more!

This book is part of the bestselling Good Night Our World series, which includes hundreds of titles exploring amazing locations in a lovely rhythmic fashion. I can’t wait to read some of the others, especially Good Night Canada and Good Night Toronto.

The Very Hungry Caterpillar. A wonderfully simple story by the beloved author and illustrator Eric Carle about the very hungry caterpillar and how he ate and ate and ATE!!! Then had a long nap and woke up looking a LOT different. You’ll never guess the ending! Actually, ALL his books are favorites around here. My friend Robin gave us her slightly loved copies from her girls who were getting a bit older. They wanted our Bug to have them.

I would be amiss if I didn’t include Winne The Pooh by A.A. Milne. This takes me back to my childhood and I love reading about these beloved characters to him!

The Gruffalo by Julia Donaldson. A gift at our baby shower (we did a book and diaper raffle to start his library off on the right foot!) This is a modern classic and has over 13 million copies sold worldwide! The story of a brave little mouse who outsmarts all the creatures in the forest who want to have him for lunch! I think I have read this one a million times already but still love it!

Don’t Be Afraid Little Pip! by Karma Wilson. Pip just wants to learn how to fly like all the other birds she sees, and as much as she tries, she can’t! She is afraid to learn the one thing that all penguins must do…swim! A great story about overcoming the fear of trying new things! This is one of three Little Pip books by Wilson and they are all really adorable.

I’d Know You Anywhere, My Love by Nancy Tillman. Also a gift at our shower, the first time I read this I bawled… (hello hormones!) All kidding aside though, a sweet book about how you would know your child anywhere and that they are always loved.

You’re Here For A Reason by Nancy Tillman. We haven’t bought this one yet but it sounds really sweet too. Letting kids know not only that they are loved but also how much they matter in this world.

During potty training, or actually, before you even start, it’s a great idea to read books on the subject to introduce your child to the concept. So, if you are currently riding the potty train, here are a few choices for you to check out!

The Potty Book For Boys by Alyssa Satin Capucilli. Before we started potty training, we read this one constantly to introduce Bug to the concept. Follows the trials of a little boy named Henry as he learns to use the potty like a big boy. For all you girl Moms out there, there is one specifically for girls too!

Caillou: Potty Time by Joceline Sanschagrin. Truthfully, we NEVER watch the Caillou cartoons but this book was also really helpful with introducing the concept of potty training.

Potty Animals by Hope Vestergaard. Beyond adorable, a cute group of animals learning about toilet etiquette!
