Mom Fatigue (It Ain’t A New Thing)

One of my hobbies is genealogy and as I do my research into my family tree there’s something that strikes me often and inspires me constantly.

Our female ancestors who became mothers faced some heavy-duty challenges. I can’t even begin to imagine how tired they were when they fell into bed after a day of taking care of their families. It wasn’t unusual to have 7-10 (or more!) kids in those days so in a lot of cases mothers would be pregnant almost every year for 20 years!

Add in the fact that there were no or very few modern conveniences that we are fortunate to have today like, running water, electricity, appliances. Today everything we desire is one click away at the touch of our fingertips and delivered to our door almost immediately!

I can only imagine traveling back in time to tell my great-great-grandmother that I ordered a diaper genie through a small contraption called a smartphone which is actually a computer. Safe to assume she would think I was something sent by the devil. Ha!

Anyway, I digress.

My point is… when I feel tired, or a little self-pitying because I am frustrated, I think of those tired moms of yore and try to snap out of it. Yes, we face different types of challenges especially juggling work/family or being a single mom which was extremely rare 100 years ago than our ancestor mommies did. But personally, I find thinking of their struggles really does help me stay grounded and appreciative.

Remember, some days are good (spectacular and amazing even), while some days are not so hot. But there is something positive to be found in every day, even when you are feeling “mom tired” and overwhelmed.

So for all you weary moms out there, here are a few of our favorite tired mom quotes. Some are short, some are long but I hope you find one that speaks to you!

Tired Mom Quotable Quotes

“Moms come in all shapes and sizes. There is no formula for the perfect mom. But there is one thing we all have in common – and that is the deep love we carry for our sons & daughters.” ~Mandi Hart

“‘My home is filled with toys, has fingerprints on everything, and is never quiet. My hair is usually a mess and I am always tired, but there is always love and laughter. In 20 years, my kids won’t remember the house or my hair, but they will remember the quality time we spent together and the love they felt.” ~Unknown

“Mother is a verb. It’s something you do. Not just who you are.” ~Dorothy Canfield Fisher

“When I first became a mother I suffered from serious ‘half-ass’ shame. I felt like I was mediocre at everything. I felt so stretched and so distracted (and exhausted). I said ‘Yes’ way too often in an effort to prove that I could do it all. I’ve worked so hard over the past decade to move from ‘What will people think’ to ‘I am enough.’” ~Brene Brown

“There’s no tired like Mom tired” ~Unknown

“Motherhood is meant to overwhelm us. It’s meant to slow us down and remind us of what matters most. It’s meant to expand us in order to make room for the children we’re (briefly) given to guide. It’s meant to reshape us into fuller, more well-rounded women. It reminds us of our interdependency, shows us where we still need to grow, and strengthens our capacity to connect from the heart.”
~Beth Berry

Don’t tell a mother she looks tired; she already knows that. Tell her she’s doing a great job; she may not know that. ~Stephanie Peltier

“A mother’s love is everything Jared. It is what brings a child into this world. It is what moulds their entire being. When a mother sees her child in danger, she is literally capable of anything. Mothers have lifted cars off of their children and destroyed entire dynasties. A mother’s love is the strongest energy known to man. You must that love, and its power.”
~Jamie McGuire (Eden)

Love takes many forms:
It looks like a cuddle after a scraped knee.
It looks like working two jobs to make ends meet.
It looks like giving your last mouthful to your child who asks for a bite.
It looks like sleepless nights with the kid who has a temperature.
It looks like enforcing consequences for actions.
It looks like a thousand packed lunchboxes.
It looks like being your child’s biggest fan.
It looks worn knees from praying and it looks like “I love you” said a million times.

Mandi Hart

“Single moms: You are a doctor, a teacher, a nurse, a maid, a cook, a referee, a heroine, a provider, a defender, a protector, a true Superwoman. Wear your cape proudly.”
~Mandy Hale

It’s a trade-off, really, you either choose to sleep, or you choose alone time. I choose alone time, hands down, nearly every night. During these late hours, our home is perfectly still. I can hear the dog breathing at my feet, the creaks and groans of the house, and the hum of the refrigerator. This is my time, and I cherish every moment of it. There are no children pulling at the hem of my shirt, asking for yet another snack. No noise, no chaos, just me and my thoughts.” ~Jorrie Varney

“To be a mother you must be strong. Even if you don’t feel it, you have to pretend.” ~Sade Adu
