When you first get started with essential oils, it can be a bit of an information overload. Here’s a simple list for beginners to kick off your oily journey. Some basic DIY rollerball recipes, because there’s an essential oil for everything under the sun!

Some of my blog posts may contain affiliate links, from which I may receive a small commission at no additional cost to you. More info on that in our disclosure and privacy policy.

Little by little, you will get to know your favourites and what works best for you and your family according to your needs. It’s nice to have a natural way to help relieve some common aches and pains that we all get from time to time.

Before you start, you will need to choose which carrier oil to use. A carrier oil is simply the oil that dilutes the essential oil in the rollerball and has a neutral smell. Essential oils on their own will eventually evaporate, but carrier oils do not.

Remember that essential oils are very potent and a little goes a long way. Diluting them, especially when using topically, is really important.

Some popular carrier oils include:

Jojoba Oil

Grapeseed Oil

Vitamin E Oil

Fractionated Coconut Oil

Sweet Almond Oil

Avocado Oil

Marula Oil

Choose your carrier oil wisely because they do have a shelf life (around 6 months to a year). So take into consideration how quickly you will go through it. For me, this is never a problem because I also moisturize with almond or jojoba oil after a hot shower or bath as a part of my self-care routine.

Also, they have different weights or consistencies. So, for example, if you are applying the oil to your face, you will want to choose something light to medium consistency that won’t clog pores like grapeseed or jojoba.

In my experience, I have found that grapeseed or jojoba oil are both great all-around choices for a carrier oil. Jojoba oil absorbs easily in the skin and doesn’t clog pores. This makes it a fantastic carrier oil option for massage oils, facial moisturizers, and bath oils too! Young Living has some great tips on how to choose carrier oils according to your needs.

If you plan on using your rollerball blends daily (or for your regular skincare routine), you will probably go through it quickly enough that it will stay fresh. Any carrier oil can go rancid after sitting around for too long and you’ll easily know by the smell. I had one rollerball that I forgot about and found in my dresser after a year. P.U! I had to toss it.

How To Fill A Rollerball Bottle

Generally, the rollerball bottles you purchase are either 5 mL or 10 mL. First, drop in the recommended number of drops into your rollerball and then add the carrier oil slowly with a plastic syringe.

Be careful not to overfill! Replace the rollerball with the rollerball tool and shake well to blend.

It’s important to use glass bottles because they will not break down (like plastic can) from the essential oils. Also, it is recommended to use a dark-colored bottle to keep out the light. This will extend the life of your product. Personally, I like the dark blue rollerball bottles, but that’s only because blue is my favourite colour.

Once you have your supplies (essential oils, carrier oil, pipette droppers, paper towels and rollerball tool), set yourself up on the kitchen table or other ample work surface and get started!
